NaPoWriMo #6

Today’s poem was inspired by an image of a newspaper article/opinion piece that is going around Facebook.  The image talks about how guns don’t kill people.  There are so many things wrong (in my opinion) with the logic displayed in that article that I didn’t know where to begin.  So I began with a poem:

It was not the gun
that killed her son
in the war
he fought for love of country
which is to say,
for the then-government’s then-best-interests.
It was the Enemy,
she knew,
the idea of the Enemy.

She knew it like a lullaby.

It was not the gun
that killed the children
as they sought knowledge in books and tests.
It was the mentally ill
man     the ideas the mentally ill
man had          the idea of the mentally ill
man.

She knew.

And when the gun became big
and then atomic

it was not the bomb
that melted flesh
wiped out the people
and made the survivors sick.
It was the fingers
on the red phone
the idea of the phone              the red fingers.

She knew

it was not the gun
that killed her son
the idea of her son.
She took          she took aim,
and she shot
the idea.
