NaPoWriMo #14

Trigger warning:  references to eating disorders featured in today’s poem.

she bends        rips her
clothes
heart out
does it please?
her fingers bleed
skin pulled taut
is she perfect yet?
there are bones
perfect ribs exposed

is this beauty?
is this life?

she wanted to be a beauty queen
to wish for world peace
at the hands of an adoring crowd
she grows fat instead
sneaking sweet cakes and salty
extrusions of animal fat
bleeding the mirror dry
and sobbing herself to sleep at night

when they die, we have failed.
if they live, we say they are sick
and continue to shrink a fake world in images.
